While I have long considered myself an author of both fantasy and science fiction, for a long time I wrote a good deal more fantasy. My first publications were all fantasy, and I wasn’t sure if I would ever quite figure out how to make science fiction work. I’ll be honest, science is not my strongest suit. Math makes my head hurt. I often felt like a bit of a fraud when I tried to write stories outside of the comfortable familiarity of fantasy.
Somewhere along the way, however, something changed. I think it has to do with understanding that, for me, the story is about the characters. Just like fantasy, these are people faced with a dilemma, who need to take action to resolve the situation. Allowing myself to focus on that inner story has freed me up tremendously.
My two most recent sales, to Nature and Perihelion Science Fiction, are both sci-fi tales. Both feature strong, but flawed, characters facing tremendous odds. I’m proud of both stories and so excited to have them shared with the world.
As of this writing, I do not have publication dates for either, but I’m looking ahead to the day when I can share where to find them.
